The Training of Trainers (ToT) on Sustainable Sanitation and Water was held from 23rd to 25th November 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The course was jointly organized by Malaysian Capacity Development for Sustainable Water Management (MyCDNet) and Indah Water Konsortium Sdn. Bhd. (IWK), Malaysia’s national sewerage company. This is the first ToT on Sanitation and Water in Malaysia.
The ToT was conducted as part of capacity building program and an initiative to promote better understanding of the importance of proper sanitation for sustainable development and to protect water resources and the environment. The course enabled the participants to have a good understanding of proper sewerage systems, proper sewerage treatment processes, maintenance, effluent monitoring and refurbishment needed for both sewerage systems and treatment facilities to ensure continuous effectiveness of the systems. With clear understanding of the full cycle of sewerage management, the young engineers, students, consultants, and various interested parties can play important roles in educating their colleagues or family members in for example: desludging the homes’ septic tanks and paying sewerage bills to sustain the important services rendered by the sewerage contractor to the public. Equipped with the proper knowledge, the participants are encouraged to promote the concept of proper sewerage and sanitation management at their organisations, and implement the knowledge gained wherever applicable for sustainable development.
The course was attended by 27 participants, including consultants, students and professionals from various water-related, non-governmental organizations. All participants are local, except one PhD student from Palestine.
The three-day course included the training on planning of sewerage systems, operation, refurbishment, green technology and R&D in sewerage systems, and a site visit to Bunus Regional Sewage Treatment Facility.
