To encourage participatory peri-urban water management, the Shifting Grounds project has incorporated a series of workshops across two countries of South Asia: Kolkata, India and Khulna, Bangladesh. The workshop brought local people from different professional backgrounds along with water authorities to ensure better access to water resources across peri-urban areas.
The researchers, Kolkata and Jagrata Juva Sangha, held monthly Negotiated Approach meetings in the villages, referred to as “Mango Tree Meetings”. The researchers organized two meetings on 4th December, 2015 and 2nd January, 2016. Additionally, meetings with “Hogladanga Pani Odhikar Krishok Dol» (Hogladanga Water Rights Farmers’ Team) took place on December 13, 2015 and the meeting with “Hogladanga Pani Odhikar Motswajibi Dol» (Hogladanga Water Rights Fish Farmers’ Team) took place on December 14, 2015. The meetings provided a platform for local people to share their common problems and find solutions together. They also identified various government departments responsible for providing water services at different levels. For the future workshops, these authorities will be engaged and it is believed that through discussion, mutually beneficial solution will be found.
