A training programme series on “Institutional and Management Capacity Development of Farmer Leaders in Medium Irrigation Schemes to Cope with Climate Change” has been commenced on 30th March 2017 by Cap-Net Lanka. The programme series has been arranged together with the Sri Lankan Water Partnership (Lanka Salani) as well as other local agencies. The workshop was held at the Irrigation Engineer’s office in the north-western province, and 60 farmer leaders and agency staff, including 10 women, actively participated in the programme.
With a large number of farming communities depending on the small to medium-scale irrigation systems in Sri Lanka, there is currently a lack of institutional and management support in adjusting to a new environment affected by climate change. Specifically, strengthening of capacities is needed to improve response to the increasingly occurring floods and droughts. The training programme aims to increase awareness among local farmer leaders and agency staff on various methods to cope with climate change and seasonal programme planning.
