The ESA-TIGER programme held its 7th biannual workshop in Addis Ababa on 1st and 2nd of February, at the conference centre of UNECA. The European Space Agency (ESA) launched the TIGER initiative in 2002 to promote the use of Earth Observations (EO) for improved IWRM in Africa. The overall objective of the initiative is to assist African countries to overcome problems faced in the collection, analysis and use of water related geo-information by exploiting the advantages of EO technology. The aim is to fill existing information gaps relevant for effective and sustainable water resources management at the national to regional scale in thus helping to mitigate the wide spread water scarcity in Africa.
The title of the workshop was: Broadening the Earth Observations Research and Application Capacity in Africa. At the workshop there was ample opportunity for partners and members of the initiative to present their contributions to and expectations of TIGER. At this occasion, Cap-Net, TIGER and ITC re-emphasised their partnership and commitment to a joint capacity development programme on EO and collaboration in the context of the Cap-Tec programme. For this year, the intention is to conduct one training of trainers and collaborate in developing the TIGER toolkit into a capacity development package.
