Regional Conference “Drought and flood risk management of Kyzylorda oblast”, Kazakhstan

The Regional Conference “Drought and flood risk management of Kyzylorda oblast” was held on November 3, 2015 in Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan by the Central Asian Regional Water Network CAR@WAN with the support of UNDP Kazakhstan and with the participation of Executive Directorate of IFAS in Kazakhstan.

The Conference was organized in order to discuss the issues of expected climate change, climate risk profile and risk of emergencies, as well as issues of security of hydraulic structures. It was attended by 52 representatives of interested parties including the Department of emergency situations of Kyzylorda oblast, Committee for Water Resources of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, local executive authorities, state enterprises, international, educational, scientific and non-governmental organizations from the countries of Central Asia.

Participants discussed issues of expected climate change, profile of climate risks and the risks of emergencies; as well as security issues of hydraulic structures, modeling of flooded areas, effects of hydraulic accidents, dam failure, flood forecasting and high waters in a complex system of rivers and canals through the use of advanced software; and other topical issues of climate risk management and adaptation to climate change. Following the results of the conference, participants prepared recommendations to the competent authorities and stakeholders on drought and flood risk management of Kyzylorda oblast.

The Conference was covered by local and national mass-media.

Based on materials of the Regional Conference “Drought and flood risk management of Kyzylorda oblast” there was prepared and released publication that included all the presentations of speakers and international/national experts. ')}
