Launch of new university course on “Climate risks management” in Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan

Training on the university course “Climate risks management” was held on 22-24 of August in Kyzylorda. The training was organized by the Central Asian Regional Water Network CAR@WAN with the support of UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty in collaboration with the Water Partnership of Kazakhstan and the Kazakh research institute of rice named after I. Zhakhaev.

The main objective of the training was presentation of the new course “Climate risks management”, that was developed by CAR@WAN Network in 2015. The course was developed based on international instruments in the field of climate change, international recommendations on strategies for climate risk management, best practices of specialized organizations and experience on methodological support of the teaching in higher education institutions of Kazakhstan. All the materials were prepared by leading national experts according to the state requirements for the development of university courses.

Participants of the training discussed the importance of studying the issues of climate change and adaptation to its effects as part of high school programs for professions related to water management, agriculture, environment, and others. A field trip to an experimental field of the Kazakh research institute of rice was organized in the framework of the training in order to obtain practical knowledge and familiarize participants with innovative irrigation techniques.

According to the feedback of the participants, the new course “Climate risks management” is extremely important and will improve the quality of education in the field of innovative strategies for sustainable development and poverty eradication, as well as development of the basic sciences.

The training was attended by more than 40 representatives of international organizations, local authorities, scientific and educational institutions as well as non-governmental organizations of Kyzylorda region.

The course “Climate risks management” will be implemented in Kyzylorda State University starting from September 2016, for the degrees “Water resources and water use”, ” Melioration, recultivation and protection of land”, “Land management”, “Ecology” and “Agriculture”.
