Background

Many countries in the Eastern Africa region are appreciating and going into new paradigm of water resources management, namely IWRM. Tanzania, for example, is to prepare the IWRM plans in all her nine (9) basins, but one of the drawbacks is inadequate of skilled and trained (inadequate of capacity) people to carry out the IWRM plans.

It is against this background that University of Dar es Salaam, Nile-IWRM Net and Cap-Net in collaboration with the EU Water Facility Project (Capacity Building in Integrated Watershed Management in Eastern Africa) is organizing a short training course in IWRM Planning.


General Objective
This course will deal with imparting knowledge and skills in IWRM planning required for integrated and sustainable management of water resources. The short training course is intended to strengthen and facilitate the ability of water resources managers.

Specific Objectives
 Understanding of planning cycle in IWRM
 Enhanced decision-making under a participative approach
 Better Stakeholder involvement

Contents of the course
The draft contents of the course are developed by Cap-Net and EU Water Facility Project based on a training module developed by Cap-Net and the one by EU Water Facility Project. The course will focus on planning processes in the framework of IWRM. Attention will be given to;
1. Introduction to IWRM
2. Overview in Planning for IWRM
3. Initiation
4. Mobilization
5. Establishment of a strategic vision
6. Situation analysis
7. Water management strategies and options identified
8. Preparation and approval of IWRM plan
