The Nile Basin region has been affected by floods and droughts over the past years and it is important within IWRM to capacitate water managers with these tools and strategies to effectively apply IWRM principles in managing these water related risks. Water Managers will now need to plan and develop adaptation strategies to ensure our adaptation to climate change. It is therefore important to ensure that we have trained practitioners who can lead in the development of these strategies. It is within this framework that Nile IWRM-Net is organizing a Training workshop on Factoring in hydro-climatic disasters in IWRM.

The Nile IWRM net is a regional open network that operates through decentralised activities of its member centres interested in the development and implementation of capacity building activities in the countries of the Nile Basin, namely: Burundi, D.R. Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The network aims to build regional cooperation and compliment the efforts of existing ongoing capacity building initiatives in the region so as to prioritize and enhance capacities in IWRM.

The main objective is to building regional capacity in developing strategies for coping with hydro-climatic disasters such as floods and drought during the implementation of IWRM process. This is expected to improve the resilience of the poor and vulnerable communities' through awareness creation and knowledge transfer on the use of locally available resources to cope and adapt to the hydro-climatic disasters.

The expected outcome is that water managers are able to manage water effectively, develop strategies for flood management, drought management and also start considering climate change adaptation.

The logistics of the course will be coordinated by the Nile IWRM-Net (Kenya chapter). The meeting will be held in Nairobi at the Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR). The IMTR is regional capacity building institute in water weather and climate.
This course is part of Nile IWRM-Net capacity Building Programmes for IWRM supported by Cap-Net. The training is supported by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA) and share from the experiences of the National Disaster operation Centre in Office of the President, Kenya.
