Member countries:

Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe. Members are 52 University departments, research and training institutes specialising in water.

Mission and Vision.
The vision of WaterNet is a future in which the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has the institutional and human capacity to educate and train its own water managers, capable to contribute to the equitable sharing and sustainable utilisation of water resources for poverty alleviation, economic development (livelihood security) and environmental security.

The mission of WaterNet is to build the regional institutional and human capacity in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) through training, education, research and outreach by harnessing the complementary strengths of member institutions in the region and elsewhere


Objectives:

  • To forge a strong, demand driven and sustainable network of universities and research institutions in Southern Africa in the field of IWRM.
  • To deliver and strengthen the jointly owned regional Master degree programme in IWRM.
  • To develop and deliver demand driven training and education for practising water sector professionals in Southern Africa.
  • To stimulate, regionalise and strengthen research in the field of IWRM in Southern Africa.
  • To raise awareness and understanding of IWRM and its implementation at local, national and transboundary levels.

Outputs:

2007

  • WaterNet donors meeting in Netherlands.
  • IWRM Masters programme 2007 intake of 44 students (20 female and 24 male) with 16 at the University of Zimbabwe and 28 at the University of Dar es Salaam.
  • Three short training courses attended by 100 participants from across Africa. The courses were: IWRM for Zambezi riparian countries, Zambia; Crop water requirement and scheduling, Lesotho; and Wetlands ecology and management, Botswana.
  • Challenge programme on water and food. This large programme managed by WaterNet and implemented by several project partners is now fully underway with Masters and PhD students carrying out research in 4 catchments in Zimbabwe and 1 in South Africa.
  • Prof Felix Mtalo appointed to the SADC WaterNet professorial chair at the UNiversity of Dar es Salaam.
  • WaterNet, Cap-Net, SIWI Water accountability and integrity mapping study carried out in Southern Africa.
  • 8th WaterNet /WARFSA/ GWP-SA symposium on the theme "Integrated Water Resources Management - from Concept to Practice" was held in Zambia with 256 participants.

2006

  • WaterNet registered as a legal entity in Botswana.
