-D. Madhuri, Grade 10, ZPHS, Peddapur Village

SaciWATERs in joint partnership with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), conducted an awareness programme on “Sustainable Water Conservation Techniques” across the Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS), of Peddapur Gram Panchayat, Medak District in Telangana State, India. The programme is funded by Arghyam and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

In the severely drought hit district of Medak, it is important to make the peri-urban communities aware of water conservation techniques and the importance of rainwater harvesting technologies. Joining hands with the State Government of Telangana, SaciWATERs on 9th February 2016, took up the initiative in one of the study villages to conduct an essay writing competition on “Sustainable Water Conservation Techniques” for Grade 9 and 10 Students.

Students actively participated in the competitions and were mobilizing themselves to convey the message of water conservation in their village. The top three performers were awarded with informative books. This activity highlighted the growing need for water management in peri-urban centers, as there is an acute need to generate awareness on water conservation techniques. This could begin with children across the peri-urban districts.
