Annual National Forum on Water Security Arranged by MyCDNet in Malaysia

MyCDNet held its first ever Annual National Forum on Water Security on 23 – 24 November 2016. Titled “Adaptation to Hazards Related to Climate Change”, the successful Forum was organized together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), Asia Pacific Environmental Consultants Sdn Bhd (ASPEC), Global Environment Centre (GEC), Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), with support from CapNet UNDP.

The Forum was officially opened by the Honourable YB Datuk Ir Dr Hj Hamim Bin Samuri, Deputy Minister of the NRE, and was attended by 115 participants.

The first day saw back-to-back paper presentations by notable speakers from various agencies following an enlightening Keynote Speech on Water Security by YBhg Datuk Ir Abdul Kadir Mohd Din, CEO of Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd.

The first session was chaired by YBrs. Ir. Dr. Azuhan bin Mohamed, Director-General of NAHRIM. The papers presented were “Climate Change and Climate Predictions in Malaysia” by Mr Jailan bin Simon, Director of the National Climate Centre, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD); “Climate Change Policy in Malaysia” by Dr Gary W. Theseira, Deputy Under Secretary of the Environmental Management and Climate Change Division, NRE; and “National Agenda on Disaster Management (Management & Coordination)” by Mr Mohd Zahari bin Razali, Director, Policy and Planning Division, National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).

The second session was chaired by YBhg. Dato’ Dr Md Nasir bin Md Noh, Deputy Director General II, Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Malaysia. The papers presented were “Floods and Droughts (Water Security Perspective)” by Dr Asnor Muizan bin Dato’ Hj Ishak, Subject Matter Expert, Water Resources Management and Hydrology, DID; “Pollution and Threats to Water Security” by Mdm Rohimah Ayub, Ketua Penolong Pengarah Kanan, Department of Environment Malaysia (DOE); and “Cloud-Seeding: Solution for Future?” by Mr Amrul Nizar bin Anuar, CEO of AFJETS Sdn Bhd.

The Forum ended on Day 2 after an eye-opening day trip to HORAS – Hybrid Off River Augmentation Storage sites, facilitated and organized by Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS).
